Quality Chimney Cap Replacement and Installation

Your chimney is constantly battling water and wind and attempting to stay dry storm after storm. If your chimney system is equipped with the proper defenses, it will have much better chance of winning the battle. That’s why professional installation and regular inspection and maintenance are so important. By having your system professionally maintained, you can be made aware of any weaknesses in your chimney system before they create a costly problem.

What Is A Chimney Cap?

One of the most important parts of your chimney’s defense is the chimney cap. Chimney caps are typically constructed of galvanized steel, stainless steel or copper and act as a protective covering for the chimney system. They are located directly above the crown and are an added defense against gusts of wind, bouts of rain, and birds and animals.

Why Do I Need A Chimney Cap?

Some of the most devastating chimney system damage is as a result of a missing or damaged chimney cap. Without a cap, water, snow, sleet, animals, and birds have an entryway into your chimney and home. In addition to being frustrating, dirty, and inconvenient, these imposters can create serious problems, including:

  • Brick and Mortar Decay – The brick and mortar of the chimney and fireplace are porous materials that can be seriously damaged as a result of a water problem. When water enters the masonry, it can cause spalling, lime-leaching and cracking, all of which compromise the structural and aesthetic integrity of the chimney and/or fireplace.
  • Flue Liner Deterioration – Flue liners are typically constructed of steel, aluminum, or clay tiles. If water penetrates the chimney system and reaches the flue liner, it can cause severe corrosion and deterioration. Settling onto metal liners, water can literally eat holes into the liner, leaving dangerous openings for heat and by-product transfer. When water comes into contact with a clay liner, it can cause crumbling and cracking, compromising the entire structure and leaving openings for dangerous gases and heat.
  • Flue Obstructions/Chimney Fires – When animals settle in a chimney system, they bring with them flammable nesting materials and debris, feathers or fur, food and feces. In addition to being flammable and a potential health hazard, animals and their debris often create obstructions within the flue. Flue obstructions can lead to inefficiency, smoke problems, carbon monoxide problems, and chimney fires.
