We Conduct Chimney Video Inspections Using Chim-Scan Technology

Chimney inspections haven’t always been regulated, which was the cause of great discomfort and distrust between customers and the industry. That’s why in early 2000, the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) created code NFPA 211, which clearly defines what each individual level of inspection must include. The code resulted in three levels of inspection, defined as follows:

Level 1 Inspection – A level 1 inspection is to be conducted when a system has not undergone any changes in use, appliance, flue, or fuel type. These inspections are intended to simply verify that a chimney system is safe for continued use, and that there are no obstructions or dangerous deposits within the system. In a level 1 inspection, the technician will examine all exterior and interior areas of the system and appliance that are “readily accessible”.

Level 2 Inspection – A level 2 inspection is to be conducted whenever a system has undergone changes in appliance, flue, or fuel type, and whenever property is being transferred. This level of inspection is also required after any system suffers from a malfunction, a fire, or a weather-related event or earthquake. These inspections are basically designed to give a more in-depth view of the overall condition of the system – especially in relation to changes. However, it can be difficult to know the condition of a chimney system without getting a detailed view of the inside. That’s why these inspections require the use of a video scanning system. At Bulldog Chimney Sweeps, we use the high-tech Chim-scan system, which allows us to see every last detail of the chimney interior in real time. That means we are able to go back over any questionable area to get a closer look, until we are satisfied. This system also provides recorded evidence for documentation or insurance purposes. In addition to a full internal video scan, a level 2 inspection includes an examination of all of the “readily-accessible” areas examined in a level 1 inspection, in addition to attics, crawl spaces, basements, or any other accessible areas through which the chimney travels. Proper clearance from combustibles will also be evaluated.

Level 3 Inspection – A level 3 inspection is typically conducted when a level 1 or level 2 inspection suggests problems that cannot be easily identified during a level 2 inspection. These inspections are more involved in that they often require some level of demolition in order to access problem areas.
