Bulldog Chimney Sweeps Provides Comprehensive Masonry Chimney Repair

Masonry refers to the actual brick and mortar that makes up the chimney and fireplace of your home. Designed to be incredibly durable, these porous materials can last hundreds of years when properly maintained and protected. There are, however, several things that can contribute to the breakdown of your masonry including: moisture damage, improper installation, improper materials and neglect.

  • Moisture Damage – Your chimney system is designed with many safeguards against moisture penetration. Unfortunately, these safeguards are only effective when properly installed and maintained. If, for example, a strong storm pulled up your flashing or removed your chimney cap, water can easily enter these vulnerable parts of the chimney system. This can also happen as a result of improper design. For example, if your chimney crown was not constructed to the proper thickness and width, water and wind can quickly create thin spots and holes for entry. An improperly designed crown may also be dumping water directly onto the flashing, instead of encouraging water to flow away from the chimney and off of the roof. Once water enters the masonry of your chimney or fireplace, it can cause the masonry to crack, crumble, and decay from the inside out.
  • Improper Installation – If any parts of your chimney system were installed improperly, the entire system’s efficiency, safety, and durability will be compromised. An inefficient and poorly designed or installed system will result in masonry damages, most likely related to water or creosote.
  • Improper Materials – Chimneys and fireplaces are constantly exposed to extremely high temperatures and abusive by-products. For this reason, it is imperative that they be built of brick and mortar designed for such abuse. If your firebox, fireplace, or chimney were not constructed with this in mind, they may have been made of inadequate and improper masonry. In this situation, you will need to rebuild for the safe and continued use of your system.
  • Neglect – When a chimney system is neglected, all kinds of problems can arise that will decrease the longevity and safety of your masonry. When neglected, your chimney system can be the victim of water, animals, and creosote, and can deteriorate beyond repair before you even see the signs.

The most important thing you can do to protect and preserve the masonry of your system is to schedule regular chimney inspections and cleanings. This will not only keep your system working and looking great, it will also alert your chimney sweep to any dangers, decay, or flaws within the system before they result in extensive damage.
