Professional Firebox Restoration

The firebox is the part of the fireplace that actually holds the fire. In other words, this is the area that is exposed to the most heat and the most abuse. Because of the heat and abuse that the firebox is constantly exposed to, the firebox is often one of the most damaged areas of the chimney system.

A quality firebox should be built of refractory firebrick and mortar that is able to withstand higher temperatures than traditional brick and mortar. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. A firebox that was not constructed of quality, fireproof brick and mortar will deteriorate relatively rapidly and frequently (especially when not well-maintained).

Another common cause of firebox decay is water penetration. Well-designed and maintained chimney systems are fully capable of keeping water from entering the system and causing damage. But, as with any system, if any parts are damaged, missing, or improperly installed, the entire system is vulnerable. Once water finds a way into the chimney system, it can make its way down to the firebox where it can collect and cause extensive damage. It may crack, crumble, or otherwise destroy the brick and mortar, leaving a dangerous and ineffective firebox.

What If My Firebox Is Damaged?

The first step in firebox restoration is to call Bulldog Chimney Sweeps! Once in your home, we will locate any and all flaws or causes of deterioration within your system. If there are leaks contributing to water damage within the firebox, they must first be located and addressed before restoration work can begin.

Once we have located and addressed all causes of firebox damage within the system, we will begin by cleaning the mortar joints and replacing them with new refractory mortar. Refractory mortar is able to withstand much higher temperatures than traditional mortar and will last for years and years if the system is regularly cleaned and maintained.

If the bricks within the firebox are inadequate or seriously damaged, we may need to replace them with new refractory firebrick. Refractory firebrick is designed to take much higher heats, and like refractory mortar, can be incredibly durable.

Whatever your firebox restoration needs, you can trust Bulldog Chimney Sweeps to get the job done right! We have extensive knowledge, education, training, and experience in firebox restoration, and we guarantee all of our work!
