Wood Stoves vs Wood-Burning Inserts – What’s The Difference?

When considering a new appliance, the choices can be overwhelming and the differences can be confusing. If you aren’t quite sure what makes a wood stove different from a wood-burning insert, you’re not alone! Here is some information on the major differences – we hope you find it helpful!

Wood Stoves

A wood stove typically refers to a freestanding appliance that may be connected to a masonry or prefabricated chimney or venting system. Regardless of whether you are planning on venting your wood stove through a masonry chimney or a prefabricated chimney, it is incredibly important that you have the appliance and venting system professionally evaluated for compatibility. If your flue is not appropriately sized or designed for use with wood, you will have serious safety and efficiency problems.

Traditionally, wood stoves are made of cast iron, and are excellent heat producers. Some of the advantages of using a wood stove are: placement freedom, functionality independent of utilities, cook-top options, and low fuel costs. For more information on wood stoves, click here.

Wood-Burning Inserts

Wood-burning inserts are appliances that are designed to fit into an existing fireplace. Many people opt for inserts when they want to increase the efficiency of their existing masonry fireplace, or when their existing fireplace is no longer safe for use. When considering a wood-burning insert, it is important that you have your existing chimney checked for safety, overall condition, and compatibility. If the flue is in bad condition, is not designed for use with wood, or is disproportionate to your appliance size, you may need to have it relined. Learn more about wood-burning inserts here.
